The 100 Word Novel – Eighteen: ‘Friend’

‘So I got a bit of a fright on my way here,’ said Park, putting his clothes back on.

‘Yeah?’ Said Viv. She was wrapped in the blanket and though it was itchy on her bare skin it was warm.

‘Your friend, Joe, came out of here just as I came round the corner.’

‘He’s not my friend,’ said Viv, pulling the blanket tighter around her.

Park felt the temperature drop in the room, ‘Anyway, I saw him and then he was gone.’

‘Little creep’s probably put a camera in here.’

Park shrugged, ‘Then he’d have got one helluva show.’

Friday Fictioneers: Witches and Why Not To Date Them.

Mum said never go on dates with witches.

They always order really odd food and tell unfunny/unsettling stories.

When you meet their family you find their father is cast in bronze, mounted on the wall and never stops laughing and saying ‘I’m with stupid,’ while inevitably pointing at you.

They keep weird pets like salamanders and little Scottish men in cages.

And they’re impossible to break up with.

You try and let them down gently and they kick you through a window. Say ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ and they swap your brains to check.

Should have listened to mum.

Some belated Friday Fictioneers action for ya.

The 100 Word Novel – Seventeen: Tealights and Picnic Blankets

Viv entered the restrooms. Park had rustled up two little tealights and placed them by the mirrors. Their flames gave off a weak light that was amplified by the reflection.

Park was sat on a scratchy tartan picnic blanket they had found in one of the storerooms.

‘It’s freezing in here,’ said Viv, hugging herself.

Park smiled, ‘Is that my cue to say some line about warming you up?’

‘Only if you can actually do it.’

He reached up and she took his hand. He gently pulled her down to sit on the rug.

‘I’ll see what I can do.’

The 100 Word Novel – Sixteen: Runaway

Before she entered the disused restrooms Viv looked around to see if anyone was watching or had followed her.

There were a few people in the camp who knew about her and Park’s affair and she hoped they could keep it to themselves. Captain Butler wasn’t keen on fraternisation between civilians and his soldiers and Peg had warned her to be careful because getting pregnant in their current circumstances could be extremely dangerous.

It didn’t matter though because they had a plan. Soon, in the dead of night, they would leave the Fort, run away together and never look back.

The 100 Word Novel – Fifteen: School

On her way to her meeting with Private Park Viv saw the kids leaving school.

It had been decided that although they didn’t have the materials or staff to teach a full curriculum (it was also deemed pointless vis-a-vis the recent apocalypse ) the surviving children should know basic numeracy and literary. There were twenty students aged between five and nine and they were clumped together in a single class and taught by a rotation of survivors with teaching experience.

Viv waved to Sue, the teacher on duty, and carried on towards where her man waited for her.

The 100 Word Novel – Fourteen: Romance

At a quarter to three Privates Park and Dancer finished their patrol. It was boring, cold work and the two were glad to be done with it.

Dancer shivered violently, ‘Park, you coming for a drink?’

‘Of what? Practice isn’t trying to make toilet wine is he again?’

Dancer smiled, ‘Not trying, succeeding.’

‘Pass.’

‘Oh I see, you got a hot date with Soup Girl?’

‘Maybe,’ said Park.

‘Say no more. Where are you taking her today? Fancy restaurant, the movies, evening stroll?’

‘The last toilet cubicle in the disused bathroom behind the gift shop.’

‘Who says romance is dead?’

Friday Fictioneers: Storage

I keep my batteries in a jar.

I keep my jars inside barrels.

My barrels I keep in shipping containers.

The shipping containers are kept inside my garages.

My garages are stored in my warehouses.

My warehouses live inside my airplane hangars.

My hangars lie at the bottoms of the canyons I bought from the government.

The canyons have all been moved to my island, which I won in a gameshow.

I also won a shrink ray and sometimes when I get bored I shrink my jars, barrels, containers, garages, warehouses, hangars, canyons and islands and store them inside batteries.

100 Word Novel – Interlude: The Malady

The virus known as W10N1 (aka Mega-Flu aka The Malady aka The Lady) was first discovered in New York. The patient zero was a man by the name of Jacob Leon Spitz who visited his doctor complaining of flu-like symptoms (aching joints, headaches, dizziness, shivers etc.) His symptoms came with the added twist that his skin broke out in bulbous, painful sores that upon bursting spewed out off-white pus speckled with blood. These weeping sores quickly became infected and within a week of visiting the doctor Jacob was dead. Eight weeks later ninety-nine percent of the Earth’s population joined him.

The 100 Word Novel – Thirteen: What Peg The Doctor Has To Say

When Kat sat down all eyes turned to Peg. She was wearing a white coat that was warm and also looked enough like a doctor’s coat to put people at ease when they came to see her for medical advice. She stood up. ‘Bea has symptoms similar to The Malady. She has a fever, aching joints, vomiting, fainting spells. It’s possible she just has the flu but at this point, in this place we can’t be sure and can’t be too careful. I vote yes.’

Kat stood up and walked out without looking back.

Peg sat down, ‘God damn it.’

The 100 Word Novel – Twelve: What Kat The Lawyer Has To Say.

‘I don’t think we should even be having this conversation. We have been trapped here for six months but we’re not savages,’ said Kat, ‘yet. I honestly think if we start down this road everyone with even so much as a sniffle is gonna come under suspicion and then what? We’ll have witch trials and chaos on our hands. I respect everyone’s opinion and I can understand your fear and concern but I think we’re forgetting the most important thing here and that is that we’re talking about an eight year-old girl. I won’t kill a child. I vote no.’

The 100 Word Novel – Eleven: What Reg the Former Deputy Mayor Has to Say

Reg, the former deputy mayor of Bindberg, wore a suit the colour of bitter, milk-less coffee. When it was his turn he stood up and simply said, ‘We can’t have infection within these walls. I vote yes.’

‘Just like that?’ Said Kat.

He folded his arms.  ‘Yeah, just like that. The more time we spend flapping our gums here is more time that she could escape from that hut you’ve got her stashed in out back.  If she’s sick and she’s dancing with The Lady and she finds her way in here then we’re all dead. Again, I vote yes.’

The 100 Word Novel – Ten: What Tim the Gift Shop Manager Has to Say

Tim had polished his HELLO MY NAME IS TIM HOW MAY I HELP YOU? badge  and had trimmed his mustache lopsidedly. He read from notes written on Fort Wednesday gift shop stationery.

‘Morning fellow leaders,’ he looked up and smiled and Peg assumed it was a stage direction from his notes. He held the smile/look too long before continuing. ‘We gather here to make a most grave decision. Anyone’s death is a tragedy and I think we’ve all experienced too much tragedy recently but I find Tennyson comes to mind when-‘

‘Tim,’ said Captain Butler.

‘I vote yes,’ said Tim.

Well, you need my lads and they follow me and that’s fine but I’m not trained for decisions like this.’ He stopped again and then, ‘Fuck it. I vote no.’

The 100 Word Novel – Eight: What Captain Butler Has to Say

‘I’ll start by saying,’ said Captain Butler, ‘that this can’t be easy for you. But this is one of those greater good things,’ he paused to look them all in the eye. ‘Bea is sick. Evidence points to it being The Lady. If that’s true we have to act now. Keeping her alive only increases the risk of infection. I know some people believe that we are immune to the disease but I would prefer to not test that out. The actual act would be carried out by me or my men and she would not suffer. I vote yes.’

The 100 Word Novel – Seven: Meeting

Six people were in charge of Fort Wednesday. Peg; a doctor, Captain Butler; a soldier, Kev; the foreman of a local car plant, Reg; the deputy mayor of Bindberg where the Fort stood, Kat; a lawyer and Tim (who had run the Fort Wednesday gift shop when the Fort had still been a tourist attraction.

They assembled in the shop’s staff room. Empty lockers once filled with junk, spare clothes and posters lined the walls while the six leaders sat on a long bench table in the room’s center.

They had decided that Captain Butler should state his argument first.

The 100 Word Novel – Six: Morning

Joe climbed down the ladder from the walls to the ground. He brushed snow from his shoulders and shook his head like a dog.

The camp had awoken more fully now and people were milling around eating soup from metal cups or plastic bowls.

The steam rising from each person’s soup made Joe’s mouth water but he smelt the onions and knew there would be no kissing today.

He sauntered over to Viv who quickly hid a look of distress that crossed her face.

Joe clenched his fists and pretended that he hadn’t seen the look.

He smiled, ‘Mornin’, Viv.’
