2. Batman and the Monster Men (2006) – Story and Art by Matt Wagner
This comic is written as a direct sequel of sorts to Year One, at least stylistically. However, Matt Wagner is no 80’s Frank Miller so his attempts at hard-boiled inner monologues fall flat and feel like parody more than story telling. This comic features the first appearance of the Batmobile, Hugo Strange, and Bruce Wayne’s on-again-off-again love interest Julie Madison, a law student who only seems capable of speaking in law-related puns. The story, Strange creates giant monster men, isn’t great but the focus on the Gotham gangsters continues the mafia storyline started in Year One in a satisfying way.
