7. Batman: The Long Halloween (1996 – 1997) – Story by Jeph Loeb, Art by Tim Sale

Because this and Dark Victory essentially form one story in two parts I will split these reviews between art and writing.

Tim Sale’s art in this book is stunning. You could choose any panel of this comic (or its sequel) and frame it on your wall. His Batman is huge with giant fists like wagon wheels. His Poison Ivy has uncontrollable vines for hair that spread out across any panel she’s in. His Catwoman is as sleek and sharp as a blade. His Joker has long, grotesque teeth held in a rictus grin. This is simply a beautiful, gorgeous book.
