10. Robin: Year One (2001) – Written by Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty, Art by Javier Pulido and Marcos Martin
Robin: Year One isn’t the gritty look into the heart of Gotham’s underbelly like Batman: Year One, and that makes sense. Robin as a character brings light to Batman’s life. There is the constant motif throughout Batman’s stories that the Robins keep him from going completely over into darkness.
This book is a great look at Dick Grayson’s shaky beginnings as Robin as he learns some tough lessons about the world he has begun to inhabit, as well as the strict teachings of his new partner and mentor.
And, as usual, Alfred steals the show as the wise, cocky narrator.
