13. Batman: The Cult (1988) – Written by Jim Starlin, Art by Bernie Wrightson
The Cult is notable for two reasons. One is that is one of only a few graphic novels featuring Jason Todd and two is that this is comic is basically what The Dark Knight Rises is based on. It’s actually quite freaky how much of Rises is in this book only instead of Bane, the villain is the mystical Deacon Blackfire. Gorgeously drawn, intensely violent, and full of swear words, this is one of the most grown up and dark Batman stories as he is broken by Blackfire and must regain control of both his mind and his besieged city.
